Happy New Year everyone! How can you improve the rankings of your website in 2010?
It seems that a lot of people have HEARD about Social Bookmarking and they’ve HEARD that it can do wonders for your traffic and positioning, BUT many may still be asking : “What exactly IS Social Bookmarking?”
The most common “Social Bookmarking” sites are Delicious, Digg, Reddit, Propeller, StumbleUpon, Dropjack and others… But there are dozens, even hundreds more.
They are websites where you can create a user account and then submit links that you find interesting to share with your friends, or the entire web.
If others like the links you submit, they vote for them, or they tag them, or they save them to their own bookmarks. Either way, the more activity there is surrounding a link, the more popular it gets on the site.
Now, the beautiful part is that most of this social bookmarking and voting is “public” for all the web to see and guess who loves sites that get social bookmarked?
The search engines.
In fact, with the rise of social web, search engines like Google are placing a larger importance on sites that they see are being socially bookmarked on these sites.
The result is simple: if they see your site being social bookmarked, your search engines rankings tend to rise.
So how do you get your site social bookmarked?
Well, you could spend hours/days/months listing your site and any relevant internal pages on all the social bookmarking sites yourself. Or you could try using a social bookmarking service!! Social Bookmarking has become one of the most important methods to getting traffic to your site. In Social Bookmarking, we bookmark your site with 311 bookmarking sites including all the major bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious etc. Once submitted, these bookmarks can be viewed and shared by others.
Social Bookmarks can offer your website all of this:
- Build Permanent Web Site Links
- Get your web site exposed in more areas on the internet
- Get your site indexed by the major search engines easier
- Receive more targeted traffic to your web site
- Uses Manual social bookmarking process for best results
- Creates Text Links Using Your Important Keywords
- Uses the optimal number & highest quality social bookmarking sites
- Boost Your Search Engine Rankings and Position
And unlike many web directories, deeplinking is positively encouraged by the social bookmarking sites!!

Easy Online Discount Codes – site already hits 20th in Google
Filed under: Affiliate Marketing, Cashback Shopper, Easy Online Discount Codes, SEO, Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Rankings; Tagged as: cashback shopping site, Cashback Site, Google, google co uk, online discount codes, Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Rankings, search term, SEO, SERPSNo CommentsI recently relaunched http://www.easyonlinediscountcodes.com and did some SEO work on it. Within just a month or two, it has managed to reach 20th place in Google for the search term “online discount codes“, which has approx 8,000 searches per month & about 50,000,000 results to compete with on google.co.uk!!
There may be further developments with this site, so hopefully the content will become even more comprehensive & improve the rankings still further!
It just goes to show that there is definitely something strange going on with Cashback Shopper, as this site still fails to rank in Google, despite being optimised more than some of the sites that are actually in the top 10! It’s very annoying & my resolution for 2010 is to find out why.

Fantastic Cashback Shopper rankings in Bing, but nowhere in Google
Filed under: Cashback Shopper, Search Engine Rankings, bing; Tagged as: bing, Google, keywords, link, Link Building, links, search engine index, Search Engine Optimisation, search engine placement, search engine ranking, Search Engine Rankings, search engines, searchers, SEO, SERPSNo CommentsI’ve been carrying out a lot of link building on Cashback Shopper as its Google rankings have pretty much vanished & I’m keen to recover them. I wonder if it’s because the site is a white label & Google has decided it’s just duplicate content.
However, a recent ranking check of Bing has revealed that Cashback Shopper has 15 page 1 positions, 5 on page 2 & 5 on page 3, for some of the most popular search terms relating to cashback shopping. This is how the site used to feature in Google, so I hope these positions aren’t just temporary until Bing picks up a market share of searchers.
It’s very frustrating that Cashback Shopper is in no4 spot for “cashback shopping” and “cashback uk” in Bing, but neither phrase is anywhere in Google! I guess I just have to keep trying to find more Google worthy links for the site

Link-Building Policy for Bing
Filed under: Google, Link Building, SEO, Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Rankings, Yahoo, bing; Tagged as: back links, backlinks, bing, bloggers, dejarnette, Google, inbound links, Link Building, links, natural search, Organic Link Building, other search engines, search advertising, search engine, search engine ranking, Search Engine Rankings, search engines, search market, search marketing, search rankings, webmaster center, Yahoo2 CommentsIt’s easy for everyone to get caught up in obsessing about how to optimise your site & build links for Google, when trying to market through search. That’s certainly a wise thing to do, considering Google totally dominates the search market. But, there are still other search engines that some people are using, so it is wise to make sure your site is performing to the best of its ability in those too!
Obviously the other two engines are Yahoo and Bing and whilst Yahoo is seemingly declining fast, Bing is actually gaining a market share. Furthermore, if the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo goes through, Bing search will be talking over Yahoo anyway. With the muscle of Microsoft behind Bing, you can be sure the search engine won’t be prepared to play second fiddle to Google for long!
However, unlike Google, we don’t hear much about what Bing wants out of a site for decent rankings, but Rick DeJarnette of Bing Webmaster Center has shared some dos and don’ts of link-building for Bing. Not surprisingly, a lot of his advice for complying with Bing’s policies, does not differ too much from the advice that Google would give you. It is however, still always nice to hear what they think, just to clear up any possible confusion.
Like Google, Bing places great emphasis on quality links to determine its rankings. “Just don’t make the mistake of believing it will result in instant gratification. Successful link building efforts require a long-term commitment, not an overnight or turnkey solution,” says DeJarnette. “You need to continually invest in link building efforts with creativity and time.”
What You Should Do!
DeJarnette shared some tips for getting more quality links. The following are Bing’s tips for effective link building (paraphrased):
1. Develop your site as a business brand and brand it consistently
2. Find relevant industry experts, product reviewers, bloggers, and media folk, and make sure they’re aware of your site/content
3. Publish concise, informative press releases online
4. Publish expert articles to online article directories
5. Participate in relevant conversations on blogs/forums, referring back to your site’s content when applicable
6. Use social networks to connect to industry influencers (make sure you have links to your site in your profiles)
7. Create an email newsletter with notifications of new content
8. Launch a blog/forum on your site
9. Participate in relevant industry associations and especially in their online forums
10. Strive to become a trusted expert voice for your industry, while promoting your siteWhat You Should Not Do!
DeJarnette shared a list of things that you should avoid in your link building efforts, if it is a good Bing ranking that you are after. Here is what Bing says will get your site reviewed more closely by staff:
1. The number of inbound links suddenly increases by orders of magnitude in a short period of time
2. Many inbound links coming from irrelevant blog comments and/or from unrelated sites
3. Using hidden links in your pages
4. Receiving inbound links from paid link farms, link exchanges, or known “bad neighborhoods” on the Web
5. Linking out to known web spam sites“When probable manipulation is detected, a spam rank factor is applied to a site, depending upon the type and severity of the infraction,” says DeJarnette. “If the spam rating is high, a site can be penalised with a lowered rank. If the violations are egregious, a site can be temporarily or even permanently purged from the index.”
Most of the stuff DeJarnette shared is nothing any experienced search marketer is not already aware of, but it can be quite helpful when a search engine itself lays out what to do and not to do, to help webmasters get better rankings.

Conflicting messages from Google re Page Rank
Filed under: Google, Link Building, News, SEO, Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Rankings; Tagged as: affordable seo, back links, backlinks, Google, google search engine, google toolbar, inbound links, Link Building, one way links, page rank, permanent links, rank values, Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Rankings, SEO, seo services, webmaster toolsNo CommentsI still hear a number of people talking about page rank, page rank, page rank, when discussing whether their website is doing well, or trying to assess the results of their search engine optimisation efforts. However, page rank became less relevant when Google removed PageRank values from their webmaster centre!
Here’s the statement Google made when they did it:
We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.
However, if this is Google’s position, then why bother updating their toolbar PageRank values? Doing so is only going to create a stir in the webmaster community & cause confusion as to it’s relevance. Surely it would’ve been much mbetter to remove it from both webmaster tools and the Google toolbar at the same time.
It’s also important to remember that the toolbar Page Rank values can be a couple of month’s old, so they’re out of date even after the update & therefore not really relevant to your current ranking position. The recent PageRank update has left many webmasters confused with most reporting major decreases in their website’s ranking in the search results. But if Google’s statement is to be believed, should you really be concerned about it?
If you have a search engine friendly site, the most important issue for your Google search engine rankings are quality inbound links!

Microsoft and Yahoo finally complete their search deal!
Filed under: Google, Search Engine Rankings, Yahoo, bing; Tagged as: bing, Google, Microsoft, mr ballmer, search deal, search engine yahoo, steve ballmer, takeover bids, Yahoo, yahoo websiteNo CommentsYahoo and Microsoft have announced confirmation of a long-rumoured internet search deal that will help the two companies take on chief rival Google.
Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power the Yahoo website and Yahoo will in turn become the advertising sales team for Microsoft’s online offering.
Yahoo has been struggling to make profits in recent years, but last year it rebuffed several takeover bids from Microsoft in an attempt to go it alone.
Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer said the 10-year deal would provide Microsoft’s Bing search engine with the necessary scale to compete.
“Through this agreement with Yahoo, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company,” said Mr Ballmer.
“Microsoft and Yahoo know there’s so much more that search could be. This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search,” he added.
In return for ceding control of its search engine, Yahoo will get to keep 88% of the revenue from all search ad sales on its site for the first five years of the deal, and have the right to sell adverts on some Microsoft sites.
‘New era’
Yahoo said the deal would benefit Yahoo’s users and advertisers.
“This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of internet innovation and development,” said Ms Bartz.
“Only a Yahoo outsider like Ms Bartz could do such a deal,” said Tim Weber, business editor of the BBC News website.
“She has no sentimental attachment to what was once the core of Yahoo, its search business. Microsoft was helped by the fact that at long last it managed to develop a search engine – Bing – that is a credible alternative to search giant Google.”
Technology analyst Rob Enderle said: “This move makes up for a lot of the stupid mistakes made by the preceding [Yahoo] administration”.
The tie-up will give Microsoft and Yahoo a combined market share in the US search ad market of about 30% with Google still the dominant force with a share of about 65%. In the UK, the Google share is even higher (around 85%).
The deal ends years of back-and-forth negotiations between the two companies.

I’ve got the Alexa Sparky ranking add-on installed in Firefox & obviously, the displayed figure is the only one you notice on a day to day basis. However, since my Cashback Shopper ranking started plummeting day by day (following on from the Google Vince update), from 205,000 at its peak, to around 460,000 & falling now; although my rankings for Cashback Shopper seem to have recovered & stabilised a bit recently, the ranking is still falling, so I decided to look into the figures a little more.
My attention was drawn to the following:
Cashbackshopper.co.uk users come from these countries:
- 77.3% United Kingdom
- 1.5% France
- 21.5% OTHER
and:
Cashbackshopper.co.uk traffic rank in other countries:
- 602,105 France
- 25,967 United Kingdom
This was very interesting – as my overall ranking is falling, my UK traffic rank seems to be rising! The last time I looked, it was over 28,000 & now is 25,967. Bearing in mind the fact that Cashback Shopper is a site for UK residents only, I can only assume that despite the displayed figure falling, the fact that my UK traffic rank is rising can only be a GOOD thing! My site is the 25,967th most visited site in the UK?
Perhaps I’m interpreting this wrong, but would be interested to know if anyone else has a view on this, or perhaps knows for sure whether this is the case or not?!

I’ve been blogging recently about the complete disappearance of my site from Google SERPS, for most of my targeted keyphrases. As suspected, there has been a Google algorithm change which seems to be favouring big brand ranking on prime category keywords.
Google has confirmed the “change” to the their algorithm which is giving big brands a helping hand in their SEO efforts. The confirmation and explanation coming via a video from Matt Cutts.
Google aren’t promoting the algorithm tweak as an update, but rather just a change to enhance the value of ‘trust’ factors. As he says in the video:
“Inside of Google, at least inside the search ranking team, we don’t really think about brands. We think about words like ‘trust’ ‘authority’ ‘reputation’ ‘PageRank’ ‘high quality.”
And apparently it’s adjustments to these elements in the ranking process that are the basis of the ranking changes we’ve noted over the past few weeks. However Matt’s quick to assert that the changes are only visible on a relatively small number of queries(!!!!). Matt states, “there’s nothing in the algo change to radically impact your current SEO plans and strategies – just more the same fundamentals.”
Not from what I’ve experienced over the last few weeks Matt – the complete decimation of the last years SEO work, content writing & link building! And now I’m told to continue doing these things that seem to have been slapped down as not good enough, whilst the big brands get a helping hand. Google – on the side of the little guy!!!
