Microsoft and Yahoo finally complete their search deal!
Filed under: bing, Google, Search Engine Rankings, Yahoo; Tagged as: bing, Google, Microsoft, mr ballmer, search deal, search engine yahoo, steve ballmer, takeover bids, Yahoo, yahoo websiteComments OffYahoo and Microsoft have announced confirmation of a long-rumoured internet search deal that will help the two companies take on chief rival Google.
Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power the Yahoo website and Yahoo will in turn become the advertising sales team for Microsoft’s online offering.
Yahoo has been struggling to make profits in recent years, but last year it rebuffed several takeover bids from Microsoft in an attempt to go it alone.
Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer said the 10-year deal would provide Microsoft’s Bing search engine with the necessary scale to compete.
“Through this agreement with Yahoo, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company,” said Mr Ballmer.
“Microsoft and Yahoo know there’s so much more that search could be. This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search,” he added.
In return for ceding control of its search engine, Yahoo will get to keep 88% of the revenue from all search ad sales on its site for the first five years of the deal, and have the right to sell adverts on some Microsoft sites.
‘New era’
Yahoo said the deal would benefit Yahoo’s users and advertisers.
“This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of internet innovation and development,” said Ms Bartz.
“Only a Yahoo outsider like Ms Bartz could do such a deal,” said Tim Weber, business editor of the BBC News website.
“She has no sentimental attachment to what was once the core of Yahoo, its search business. Microsoft was helped by the fact that at long last it managed to develop a search engine – Bing – that is a credible alternative to search giant Google.”
Technology analyst Rob Enderle said: “This move makes up for a lot of the stupid mistakes made by the preceding [Yahoo] administration”.
The tie-up will give Microsoft and Yahoo a combined market share in the US search ad market of about 30% with Google still the dominant force with a share of about 65%. In the UK, the Google share is even higher (around 85%).
The deal ends years of back-and-forth negotiations between the two companies.

I’ve got the Alexa Sparky ranking add-on installed in Firefox & obviously, the displayed figure is the only one you notice on a day to day basis. However, since my Cashback Shopper ranking started plummeting day by day (following on from the Google Vince update), from 205,000 at its peak, to around 460,000 & falling now; although my rankings for Cashback Shopper seem to have recovered & stabilised a bit recently, the ranking is still falling, so I decided to look into the figures a little more.
My attention was drawn to the following:
Cashbackshopper.co.uk users come from these countries:
- 77.3% United Kingdom
- 1.5% France
- 21.5% OTHER
and:
Cashbackshopper.co.uk traffic rank in other countries:
- 602,105 France
- 25,967 United Kingdom
This was very interesting – as my overall ranking is falling, my UK traffic rank seems to be rising! The last time I looked, it was over 28,000 & now is 25,967. Bearing in mind the fact that Cashback Shopper is a site for UK residents only, I can only assume that despite the displayed figure falling, the fact that my UK traffic rank is rising can only be a GOOD thing! My site is the 25,967th most visited site in the UK?
Perhaps I’m interpreting this wrong, but would be interested to know if anyone else has a view on this, or perhaps knows for sure whether this is the case or not?!

I’ve been blogging recently about the complete disappearance of my site from Google SERPS, for most of my targeted keyphrases. As suspected, there has been a Google algorithm change which seems to be favouring big brand ranking on prime category keywords.
Google has confirmed the “change” to the their algorithm which is giving big brands a helping hand in their SEO efforts. The confirmation and explanation coming via a video from Matt Cutts.
Google aren’t promoting the algorithm tweak as an update, but rather just a change to enhance the value of ‘trust’ factors. As he says in the video:
“Inside of Google, at least inside the search ranking team, we don’t really think about brands. We think about words like ‘trust’ ‘authority’ ‘reputation’ ‘PageRank’ ‘high quality.”
And apparently it’s adjustments to these elements in the ranking process that are the basis of the ranking changes we’ve noted over the past few weeks. However Matt’s quick to assert that the changes are only visible on a relatively small number of queries(!!!!). Matt states, “there’s nothing in the algo change to radically impact your current SEO plans and strategies – just more the same fundamentals.”
Not from what I’ve experienced over the last few weeks Matt – the complete decimation of the last years SEO work, content writing & link building! And now I’m told to continue doing these things that seem to have been slapped down as not good enough, whilst the big brands get a helping hand. Google – on the side of the little guy!!!

Google vanishing act!
Filed under: Google, Search Engine Rankings;1 CommentThis has happened before, but never over such a prolonged period of time & now I’m starting to get worried!
Cashback Shopper is not ranking at all for 99% of my search phrases, but is still shown when searching for Cashback Shopper, so it’s still indexed.I have no idea why this sudden disappearance has happened & I’m not sure what to do about it. The site was showing in top 30 positions for dozens of key phrases & now they’re not even in the top 100!
This is only the case in Google, Yahoo rankings are still ok, although they’ve dropped a bit recently. Possibly as a result of the drop out of Google, my traffic has fallen considerably according to Google Analytics & the sites Alexa ranking is falling, down 66,000 places!
(Why have my Google positions vanished? There seems no reason for it, although the site design has been changed to match the new edeals look, does Google therefore think my site is duplicate content? This has never been a problem before though!!!
Maybe it’s a sneaky Google ploy to force me to pay £5 per click through Google Adwords instead – again, I start to think Google has too much control & there needs to be some decent cmpetition in the world of search. I won’t be holding my breath though!

I’ve just run a ranking report for Cashback Shopper & all my results have completely vanished from Google!
The domain itself is still indexed, so the site hasn’t been dropped completely; I can only assume they are going through another one of their reshuffles
/It’s really annoying as a rankings check a few weeks ago revealed the same thing, only for all the positions to be back when I checked a couple of weeks later.
What is going on with Google? Are these shuffles going to be happening on a more regular basis & if so, how much business do we lose whilst our ranking vanish?
The dominance of Google is not doing us any good when things like this happen – I do wish Yahoo or Microsoft could come up with some other killer application that might swing some searchers back to them instead……a monopoly does no-one any good at all!

The benefits of SEO in a downturn
Filed under: Advertising, Google, Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Rankings, SEO, Yahoo; Tagged as: affordable seo, internet marketing, optimize website, Search Engine Optimisation, search engine placement, search engine ranking, search marketing, search optimisation, search optimization, seo company, seo consultant, seo services, seo uk, website optimisation, website optimizationComments OffAs the recession has now been officially confirmed & the squeeze is on for businesses, many will be looking at areas where they can cut costs and these are often made in marketing strategies.
For many, search engine optimisation (SEO) is often a cost that’s cut, as perhaps it’s perceived that the benefits take longer to realise and are less tangible. However, dumping SEO can mean missing out on a fantastic cheap growth opportunity!
If you’re one of the businesses re-evaluating the future of your marketing strategy, consider the following before making your decision:
1. Ongoing Returns.
The value of SEO continues well after the actual optimisation has finished. Unlike other marketing, (PPC) where the value diminishes quickly after a campaign, SEO continues to generate results, at no additional cost!2. The traffic is “free”.
While we understand the allure of PPC (fast, guaranteed, qualified traffic), it does cost for each visitor you receive. If you stop paying, your traffic stops. SEO, on the other hand, provides free traffic so your costs are easier to control. Plus, Internet searchers PREFER the natural search listings – 65% of users click on natural results in preference to PPC.3. Go against the trend
While other businesses might shy away from SEO, or fail to understand it’s importance or benefits, it’s a great chance for businesses to capitalise on marginally lower competition. It could help generate quicker results.4. Untapped Opportunities
There are still many untapped niches in terms of SEO, especially within localised and specialist industry sectors. Again this offers great growth opportunities for smart business operators, who can quickly climb to the top of their niche market.5. Leverage the money saving trends online
Consumers ARE being more frugal with their spending and the online space is where they’re doing their comparison shopping. It’s vital for your business to be visible to them, which is why SEO is critical. Google is where the comparison shopping begins and where you need to be found – specifically within the first 30 results!Given the above benefits and the fact it’s much cheaper than other online marketing initiatives, it seems only logical that SEO should actually be the last option you cut in your marketing plans.
If you’re looking for help with promoting your website, FreshWebz can discouss your SEO options with you.
According to metrics and research firm ComScore, the internet population (users over the age of 15) has now reached 1,007,730,000 visitors. The first time it’s broken the 1 billion visitor mark; and in news that will surprise few, Google sites were the home of most of these internet visitors providing access to an astounding 77% of the market.

100% Proven Way To Quickly And Easily Outrank ANY Site, For ANY Keyword, And Get A Top Google Ranking
Filed under: Link Building, Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Rankings, SEO; Tagged as: back links, backlinks, Link Building, Organic Link Building, Search Engine Optimisation, SEO, seo link, SERPSComments OffFirst, here’s something you probably already know…
Achieving top rankings in ANY search engine in 2009…Is All About Getting More Links From Other Sites.
The reason is simple: Modern search engines place a huge value on links. The more links you have and the better quality these links are, the higher you’ll rank. If a site is linking to you, they are essentially casting a vote of trust. And the more “votes” you have, the more trustworthy your site is to Google, which naturally translates into better rankings.
With today’s Google and Yahoo, it’s also the clickable part of the link (also known as “link anchor”) that counts. Meaning, if you want to rank well for a specific keyword like “blue widgets”, you need more links with “blue widgets” in their clickable part.
Now, this all is fine, but the critical question most webmasters are struggling with is:
Where Do I Get High Quality Links And How Many Do I Need Before I Rank #1 For My Keywords
The fastest and easiest way to answer this question is by analyzing a competing website in your niche that already ranks very well.
Understand this fundamental principle, and you will be smarter than 95% of webmasters out there who are forever stuck on page 27 in Google because they are walking in the dark. Do not work harder when the solution is to work smarter, and do NOT reinvent the wheel by trying to figure the whole thing out by yourself.
You see, most super-successful webmasters who profit from the search engines don’t claim to understand exactly how Google and Yahoo work. But what they do understand, is how to look at the top-ranked sites in these search engines, draw legitimate conclusions as to why they rank so well and copy the best to make their own sites succeed.
Professional Optimisation Consultants Charge Upwards Of £2,000 For This Kind Of Research!
But! SEO SpyGlass enables you to secretly (and ethically) spy on your Google and Yahoo competition and see exactly why they rank better than you. Just launch SEO SpyGlass, and in a matter of minutes you will know everything humanly possible about why ANY site ranks well.
With SEO SpyGlass, you’ll know the answers to the critical questions any webmaster wants answered:
- Where to get high-quality links to one-up the competition and rank better for my keyword searches?
- Exactly which anchor texts (the clickable part of the link) should I use to outrank my niche competition?
- How many links it’ll take to propel my site to the top of the search engines… and get a ton of laser-targeted (and free!) traffic which translates into sales?
For the advanced folks: SEO SpyGlass will reveal the entire link building strategy of your competition, and tell you exactly why they rank well in great detail. Here’s what kind of an insight scoop you can expect from SEO SpyGlass:
- The total number of backlinks your competitor has (yes, today’s search engines place huge value on links.)
- The Google PageRank of every backlink (see how important these links actually are to Google.)
- The Alexa Traffic Rank of every backlink (uncover your competitor’s biggest traffic sources.)
- The total number of PageRank 0 to PageRank 10 backlinks your competitor has (mirror these numbers, and you’ll be able to beat your competitor’s PageRank.)
- The total number of backlinks coming from the same IP addresses (are your competitors buying site-wide links? Should you do the same? Let’s find out!)
- The exact anchor texts and anchor URLs your competitors are using (anchor text is one thing you must implement right to rank well. Find out which anchors work for your competition!)
- Your competitor’s anchor and title keyword density – which is how many times a given keyword appears within the anchors and titles of their links (you will need to mirror these numbers if you want to one-up your competition.)
- How many of your competitor’s backlinks come from forums and blogs (are they tapping into social media for traffic and links? Find out with SEO SpyGlass!)
- How many of your competitor’s backlinks come from homepages of other sites, rather than internal pages. (This is often a dead giveaway of paid links. Oftentimes, you can even see how much they are paying per link!)
- Whether or not your competitor has backlinks from DMOZ or the Yahoo! Directory (these directories are so authoritative, you will get a rankings boost just from a single link from them!)
- The exact link value of every backlink your competitor has (see how valuable each of their links is)
- The exact age of every Website linking back to your competitor (see if they get links from established, authoritative sites.)
- Plus much, much more!

There’s been a lot going on recently including a new blog for My Travel Extras, transferring the travel related posts from this blog; a change of web host (followed by changing straight back again!) & trying to get some more web design business.
First of all the change of web host! I decided that I should move my sites to a hosting company with its servers based in the UK as Get to the Top on Google: Tips and Techniques to Get Your Site to the Top of Google and Stay There suggests that Google.co.uk gives higher importance in the UK rankings to websites where the server is based in the UK. As I use 1and1 & their servers appear as being in Germany, this may be harming my .co.uk domains.
I chose Heart Internet as they offered web hosting at the same price, but with 100 mySQL databases as opposed to the 2 I have with 1and1. I transferred all my domains over to Heart, the .co.uk being free & the .com costing £5 each. Unfortunately, it was only when I had a number of the .co.uk domains transferred, that I realised that I was unable to apply more than one domain to the hosting account unless I paid a “domain mapping” charge of £20pa for each other domain!
With around 30 domains, there was no way it was worth doing that, so the only alternative was a reseller account, whereby I would also be selling web hosting! As this cost a minimum of £25 per month, with no guarantee of selling any hosting, I couldn’t consider doing this & was gutted that I’d spent loads transferring the domains over & now would end up paying through the nose for something I didn’t really need.
I have to say that this domain mapping was not something mentioned anywhere on the hosting section of the Heart site & now I will be very cautious about it if I ever consider changing my hosting again!!! It was only by going through the support database, that I found any reference to it!
I decided to bite the bullet, take the loss & transfer my domains back to 1and1
/ Luckily however, the .com transfers had not been completed and so they could be cancelled & the charges refunded. Because Heart also offers a 30 day money back guarantee, I got my hosting costs back too <phew>. I would like to say thanks to the support team at Heart Internet though, who responded to my enquiries within minutes & were very helpful in sorting this problem out, even though they were losing a customer. Excellent customer service – if only Tiscali could be like this, but that’s another story!I decided to also set up a separate blog for My Travel Extras, removing all the travel related posts from this one. Whether it makes a difference or not I’m not sure, but I presume that travel related content on the travel site would be viewed better by Google, than travel related posts on a web design domain. Fingers crossed this may help bring some visitors to My Travel Extras which has not been setting the world on fire recently and may even benefit the Freshwebz rankings too!

Google PageRank Update on New Years Eve!
Filed under: Google, Search Engine Rankings;Comments OffGoogle made one final PageRank update for 2008 by updating their toolbar rankings on new years eve! This update applies to the PageRank value shown in the Google toolbar, which is Google’s rating on the popularity of your website.
As most people are aware, the toolbar PageRank values can be a few months old and can also be different from the live values Google is using right at the moment. But at least the update may provide some popularity insights for new sites that have been working to improve their rankings.
My bidding directory site went from PR2 to PR3 & the Cashback Shopper blog rose from PR1 to PR2, although the main site stayed at PR3.
Google have confirmed this update has been applied as of the 31st December.
