Happy New Year everyone! How can you improve the rankings of your website in 2010?

It seems that a lot of people have HEARD about Social Bookmarking and they’ve HEARD that it can do wonders for your traffic and positioning, BUT many may still be asking : “What exactly IS Social Bookmarking?

The most common “Social Bookmarking” sites are Delicious, Digg, Reddit, Propeller, StumbleUpon, Dropjack and others… But there are dozens, even hundreds more.

They are websites where you can create a user account and then submit links that you find interesting to share with your friends, or the entire web.

If others like the links you submit, they vote for them, or they tag them, or they save them to their own bookmarks. Either way, the more activity there is surrounding a link, the more popular it gets on the site.

Now, the beautiful part is that most of this social bookmarking and voting is “public” for all the web to see and guess who loves sites that get social bookmarked?

    The search engines.

In fact, with the rise of social web, search engines like Google are placing a larger importance on sites that they see are being socially bookmarked on these sites.

The result is simple: if they see your site being social bookmarked, your search engines rankings tend to rise.

So how do you get your site social bookmarked?

Well, you could spend hours/days/months listing your site and any relevant internal pages on all the social bookmarking sites yourself. Or you could try using a social bookmarking service!! Social Bookmarking has become one of the most important methods to getting traffic to your site. In Social Bookmarking, we bookmark your site with 311 bookmarking sites including all the major bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious etc. Once submitted, these bookmarks can be viewed and shared by others.

Social Bookmarks can offer your website all of this:

    • Build Permanent Web Site Links
    • Get your web site exposed in more areas on the internet
    • Get your site indexed by the major search engines easier
    • Receive more targeted traffic to your web site
    • Uses Manual social bookmarking process for best results
    • Creates Text Links Using Your Important Keywords
    • Uses the optimal number & highest quality social bookmarking sites
    • Boost Your Search Engine Rankings and Position

And unlike many web directories, deeplinking is positively encouraged by the social bookmarking sites!!

I recently relaunched http://www.easyonlinediscountcodes.com and did some SEO work on it. Within just a month or two, it has managed to reach 20th place in Google for the search term “online discount codes“, which has approx 8,000 searches per month & about 50,000,000 results to compete with on google.co.uk!!

There may be further developments with this site, so hopefully the content will become even more comprehensive & improve the rankings still further!

It just goes to show that there is definitely something strange going on with Cashback Shopper, as this site still fails to rank in Google, despite being optimised more than some of the sites that are actually in the top 10! It’s very annoying & my resolution for 2010 is to find out why.

I’ve recently started using a social bookmarking service & judging by the number of Google Link Alerts I’ve started receiving, it looks like the inbound links are already building rapidly!

Rather than spending ages bookmarking key pages in maybe 10 to 20 social bookmarking sites (& spending hours on it), this service promises to do it quickly & easily, on over 300 social bookmarking sites and at a very low cost! At just 19 cents a submission, with a compensation system built in for submission failures!

It’s a simple 1 minute process; all you need to do after signing up is login to your account and enter the url of the webpage you wish to submit; their system then automatically fetches the required data from the said page (or you can enter the information yourself) and you just need to choose your submission options and make a payment. It’s that simple!

    Benefits of Social Bookmarking

    • Increased Traffic – As more and more people read your bookmarked blog post/web article and vote for it, the more popular it becomes & the traffic to your site increases.
    • Increased Visibility & Branding – Submitting to Social Bookmarking Sites puts your blog/website out there in front of millions of people, increasing your visibility ten notches and getting you more branding.
    • Get more Links – Each of these Popular Social Bookmarking Sites see tremendous volumes of traffic on a daily basis, if your blog/website has good content on it, chances are that several of these users will link to your content, thus getting you relevant links which will ultimately lead to an increase in your Rankings in the Search Engines.

    Some of the Exciting Features

    • Save your Precious Time – Social Bookmarking can really be a time-consuming process with you being required to create an account in each site before submitting your page to them manually. We have made things easy for you, just sign up, enter the page you wish to submit and we do the rest for you, saving you plenty of time in the process.
    • Flexible ordering options:

    - Submit to the entire list
    - Submit to a specific number of sites
    - Submit to your saved favourites

    • Live Reports to help you track what exactly is being done. The report includes the links to the exact page on the site where you can find your listing.
    • Place orders from as little as $5
    • Tremendous value for money, at just 19 cents a submission combined with our rewards program, we not only are the cheapest in the business, we also offer you tremendous value for your money.

    1. What is Social Bookmarking?

Social bookmarking can very simply be explained as a method where internet users can store, organize and manage their bookmarks (sites of their interest) on a public bookmarking site instead of their computers. Not only that, they can also share their bookmarks with their friends or a network of people. Social bookmarking makes the task of saving sites for future reference much easier and more accessible.

    2. Advantages of Social Bookmarking

The main advantage of bookmarking a site is the Increase in Traffic. Social Bookmarking sites are used by millions of people around the world and by bookmarking your sites/your blog posts with them, you automatically get access to the large volume of traffic coming to these sites. All you need to do is have your pages bookmarked with the various Social Bookmarking sites and if the content is good then people will surely save and share it with others. As your bookmark is tagged by others or as more people vote, its popularity rises and it moves to the front pages of the category or site. This leads to an increase in traffic.

    3. Are these submissions made manually or through an automated process?

All the submissions are made manually by our highly-trained team of submitters. Prior to beginning the order, each site undergoes a review process. In this step our editors check the details of the submitted webpage to make sure they are free from any sort of errors and also write instructions for our submitters to follow while making the submissions to the Bookmarking sites.

    4. How do I check where my site has been submitted, do I get a report?

Yes, you are provided with a detailed report on your submissions, which shows you the details of the submissions made along with a link of the final bookmarked url. You are also given an option to download this Report onto an Excel Spreadsheet.

    5. How would I know if my bookmark has become popular?

The popularity of a bookmark is determined by the number of users that have bookmarked a link publicly. Next to each bookmark, you will see a number which shows how many people have saved it, shared it or voted for it. If the number is high then it indicates that the your web-page has become popular.

I’ve been carrying out a lot of link building on Cashback Shopper as its Google rankings have pretty much vanished & I’m keen to recover them. I wonder if it’s because the site is a white label & Google has decided it’s just duplicate content.

However, a recent ranking check of Bing has revealed that Cashback Shopper has 15 page 1 positions, 5 on page 2 & 5 on page 3, for some of the most popular search terms relating to cashback shopping. This is how the site used to feature in Google, so I hope these positions aren’t just temporary until Bing picks up a market share of searchers.

It’s very frustrating that Cashback Shopper is in no4 spot for “cashback shopping” and “cashback uk” in Bing, but neither phrase is anywhere in Google! I guess I just have to keep trying to find more Google worthy links for the site

It’s easy for everyone to get caught up in obsessing about how to optimise your site & build links for Google, when trying to market through search. That’s certainly a wise thing to do, considering Google totally dominates the search market. But, there are still other search engines that some people are using, so it is wise to make sure your site is performing to the best of its ability in those too!

Obviously the other two engines are Yahoo and Bing and whilst Yahoo is seemingly declining fast, Bing is actually gaining a market share. Furthermore, if the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo goes through, Bing search will be talking over Yahoo anyway. With the muscle of Microsoft behind Bing, you can be sure the search engine won’t be prepared to play second fiddle to Google for long!

However, unlike Google, we don’t hear much about what Bing wants out of a site for decent rankings, but Rick DeJarnette of Bing Webmaster Center has shared some dos and don’ts of link-building for Bing. Not surprisingly, a lot of his advice for complying with Bing’s policies, does not differ too much from the advice that Google would give you. It is however, still always nice to hear what they think, just to clear up any possible confusion.

Like Google, Bing places great emphasis on quality links to determine its rankings. “Just don’t make the mistake of believing it will result in instant gratification. Successful link building efforts require a long-term commitment, not an overnight or turnkey solution,” says DeJarnette. “You need to continually invest in link building efforts with creativity and time.”

    What You Should Do!

DeJarnette shared some tips for getting more quality links. The following are Bing’s tips for effective link building (paraphrased):

    1. Develop your site as a business brand and brand it consistently
    2. Find relevant industry experts, product reviewers, bloggers, and media folk, and make sure they’re aware of your site/content
    3. Publish concise, informative press releases online
    4. Publish expert articles to online article directories
    5. Participate in relevant conversations on blogs/forums, referring back to your site’s content when applicable
    6. Use social networks to connect to industry influencers (make sure you have links to your site in your profiles)
    7. Create an email newsletter with notifications of new content
    8. Launch a blog/forum on your site
    9. Participate in relevant industry associations and especially in their online forums
    10. Strive to become a trusted expert voice for your industry, while promoting your site

    What You Should Not Do!

DeJarnette shared a list of things that you should avoid in your link building efforts, if it is a good Bing ranking that you are after. Here is what Bing says will get your site reviewed more closely by staff:

    1. The number of inbound links suddenly increases by orders of magnitude in a short period of time
    2. Many inbound links coming from irrelevant blog comments and/or from unrelated sites
    3. Using hidden links in your pages
    4. Receiving inbound links from paid link farms, link exchanges, or known “bad neighborhoods” on the Web
    5. Linking out to known web spam sites

“When probable manipulation is detected, a spam rank factor is applied to a site, depending upon the type and severity of the infraction,” says DeJarnette. “If the spam rating is high, a site can be penalised with a lowered rank. If the violations are egregious, a site can be temporarily or even permanently purged from the index.”

Most of the stuff DeJarnette shared is nothing any experienced search marketer is not already aware of, but it can be quite helpful when a search engine itself lays out what to do and not to do, to help webmasters get better rankings.

Why not use one of our link building or Bing Ranking Boost packages to get guaranteed links for your site.

Google have given webmasters a strong indication that the speed of a website may become an organic ranking factor in 2010!

Here’s what Google’s Matt Cutts has to say on the issue:

“Historically we haven’t used it in our search rankings, but a lot of people within Google think that the web should be fast, it should be a good experience and so it’s fair to say if you’re a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus, or if you have an awfully slow site, maybe users don’t want that as much.”

Google already considers page load times as part of the AdWords quality score, so it’s a logical step for this to be included in organic listings too.

While it’s unlikely to have a huge impact on rankings (there are over 200 other factors) it would be worth preparing for its introduction ahead of time and get your site loading as fast as possible. Here are a couple of tools which can help you get started:

    • Google’s Page Speed Tool – This is a firefox plugin from Google that enables you to see which areas of your site need improvement.
    • WebPageTest.org – Another speed tool which provides optimization recommendations and other interesting stats.

I recently read an article posted by a web design company, explaining how they monitor the use of social media by copywriters, designers and coders, who work with them on projects! It was a fascinating insight into how unthinking use of social media could cost you your job, or even your next one!! The relevant content is re-posted below:

That’s why we monitor what they say online.

How do we do that? Well first we get as many of their social profiles as we can. Usually, we ask for a list of them. We’ve also found that most people won’t provide them all. We then Google search the usernames of the ones they have given us because most people use the same usernames over and over. We also monitor blogs, and check for listings of social networks on those.

We have a system set up to consolidate all their social media comments into one master feed. That master feed can then be browsed directly to see what they’re up to, but that’s a lot of things to read each day. What we do is take the master feed, run it through a filter that creates two sub-feeds based on certain things we think are important to monitor. The first sub-feed is created by running the master list through a keyword & synonym filter that pulls out words related to business – for instance, “client” “business” “work” etc… The second sub-feed has a filter that runs their posts through a check for foul language and words like “sex” “drugs” “drunk” etc… There are hundreds of words in each filter.

Seem a bit ‘big brother’? It probably is – but reputation and client treatment is very important to us.

Here’s the thing: If we can read it and you can lose work with us over it… how many POTENTIAL clients did you lose also?

It’s not only self-employed freelancers, that need be concerned about this. Anyone looking for a job, or already employed, needs to be aware of what they post on the social networks &  how deeply employers are prepared to probe to find out about YOU!

I personally find it far too Big Brother for my liking; who hasn’t gone out & had one to many & it’s no wonder if employers expect everybody to be like worker drones, but it pays to be aware that if you post every detail of your behaviour on a social networking site, people can see it who you may rather not know what you got up to last night!!!

I still hear a number of people talking about page rank, page rank, page rank, when discussing whether their website is doing well, or trying to assess the results of their search engine optimisation efforts. However, page rank became less relevant when Google removed PageRank values from their webmaster centre!

Here’s the statement Google made when they did it:

We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.

However, if this is Google’s position, then why bother updating their toolbar PageRank values? Doing so is only going to create a stir in the webmaster community & cause confusion as to it’s relevance. Surely it would’ve been much mbetter to remove it from both webmaster tools and the Google toolbar at the same time.

It’s also important to remember that the toolbar Page Rank values can be a couple of month’s old, so they’re out of date even after the update & therefore not really relevant to your current ranking position. The recent PageRank update has left many webmasters confused with most reporting major decreases in their website’s ranking in the search results. But if Google’s statement is to be believed, should you really be concerned about it?

If you have a search engine friendly site, the most important issue for your Google search engine rankings are quality inbound links!

Shares in sat-nav companies bombed today after internet giant Google upset their world with a free sat-nav tool for Android 2.0 mobile phones!

This new feature comes with everything you’d expect to find in a GPS navigation system, like 3D views, turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting. But unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone’s internet connection, said Google engineers.

“When you use Google Maps Navigation, your phone automatically gets the most up-to-date maps and business listings from Google Maps — you never need to buy map upgrades or update your device,” said Keith Ito, software engineer at Google.

The software comes with a variety of views, such as Traffic View, where Google grabs traffic data over the internet, Satellite View and an amazing Street View feature that you activate by double-tapping your phone’s screen. The software also comes with a nifty “search by voice” function.

At the moment it’s only available in the US as a beta, but I can’t wait for it to come out over here, now I have my HTC Hero. What’s going to happen to the sat nav market (or even the iPhone, when the TomTom application for it costs around £60)?
