Essential Keyword Selection Tips & Tools

June 24, 2008 By freshwebz

The keyword selection process is one of the most important parts when it comes to creating your PPC ad’s, so you want to ensure that you get it right.

Selecting the correct keywords for your campaign is essential. It’s no use paying for under performing keywords that will just drain your account, with no ROI (return on investment).

So how do you know which keywords are classified as the “right keywords”?

1. Start with a List
Generate a list of keywords based on words defining your product, location, product/services etc. Carefully consider what terms users are likely to use in searching for your products/services. It is essential to use the keywords searchers use, rather than the ones you and your organization use to describe your product/service. So things that may seem obvious to you, are never searched for & vice versa.

2. Choose Specific but Not Popular Keywords
You’ll need to select keywords that are specific to your product or service offering, but you need to be careful not to select keywords that are extremely popular, as this may deplete your PPC funds sooner than expected. Certain phrases may cause your ad to appear constantly & therefore clicked on by people not really searching for your specific product. For example, I have recently run a campaign on car hire, airport parking, airport lounges & airport hotels for My Travel Extras. Although many people may search for these phrases, you have much more competition & therefore less chance of standing out from the crowd & getting a return from each click.

3. Use Phrases instead of single words.
You stand a better chance of winning the search engine wars as this helps to narrow down exactly what people are searching for. As mentioned above, rather than car hire as a search term, try using “alicante car hire” or “car hire at Gatwick”. These phrases will narrow down impressions to those people only searching for these products, who are more likely to buy as they are specifically looking for what you are offering, rather than paying for clicks for people looking for general car hire information.

4. Consider misspelled keywords
Everyone makes mistakes when they are typing, so who’s to say that your searchers don’t make this same mistake when typing in search queries – take advantage of this.

5. Constantly Change Your Keywords
Keywords should be evaluated frequently for performance. This can be done by reviewing your website statistics to see which terms are being effective in driving traffic to your website. Use Google Analytics for this as it’s free for anyone with a Google account & extremely comprehensive.

So don’t waste your hard earned money on keywords that just won’t give you customers. Take these tips into account when evaluating your keywords and see the increase in your ROI.

There are a number of tools available to help you research keywords: Google has its own Keyword Tool which also shows the volume of searches & number of competitors.

Why is Internet Explorer such a pain?!!!!

June 13, 2008 By freshwebz

I was just doing some work on the homepage of My Travel Extras, adding a top 10 London hotels widget & got it fitted in nicely with the other hotel & short break content on the page.

I use Firefox for web browsing & the page looked great viewed through it. Of course, every good web designer knows that you must test your site in different browsers, so I fired up IE7 and lo & behold, the page looks a complete mess!!! >:o/

Internet Explorer drives me mad – the page looks perfect in Firefox & Opera, but the web browser 75% of surfers use is the one that isn’t web standards compliant & has to have it’s problems worked around to build a site!

Microsoft promises that Internet Explorer 8 will be web standards compliant – I certainly hope so! In the meantime it’s back to the drawing board to try & get the page to work in ALL browsers – grrrrr!

Finally got it licked – two and a half hours later!!!! But at least it now works in Safari too, for all those MAC users :o)

Does your website need more sales, leads, or signups?

June 10, 2008 By freshwebz

Durrrr! Like me, have you been looking over your website and wondering what you need to do to increase your sales, leads or sign-ups?

In a new competition Google are offering you the “chance of a lifetime”. Imagine having the Google team give your website the once over, and undertake all the testing and tweaks to improve your site’s conversion!!!

For some lucky people it’s no longer a dream. The team at Google are running the “Website Workout” competition which will see a handful of business/website owners win the opportunity to have their websites optimised for more leads, sign-ups and/or sales.

According to the Google Website Workout page:

“Our consultants will work with you to discover ways in which we can increase site performance. Using Website Optimizer, our free website testing and optimization tool, a team of experts will work with you to determine the page layout, headlines, images, and text that will drive the most business from your site.”

To give your website the chance of winning an conversion overhaul by the team at Google, enter the Website Workout competition before June 17th 2008. You can submit your entry here.

New website design for Britannia Mirrors Ltd

June 4, 2008 By freshwebz

I was recently asked to build a website for a mirror framing company based in the East End (London), Britannia Mirrors Ltd.

The initial brief asked for a site that would show a gallery of their products, but as they sell to the trade only, they wanted people to register & provide contact details so that they would be able to follow up who was visiting/using the site. They also wanted customers to register with them before being able to download copies of their catalogue and price list which would be available from the site.

Unfortunately, the client did used to have a website at www.britanniamirrors.com, but let the domain expire & now it is owned by a domain name company who haven’t responded to my enquiries about buying the name back (why buy up names & then never reply to people who want to buy them when that is supposedly your business?!). We therefore had to go for www.britanniamirrorsltd.co.uk :o/

My initial thought was to build a site using a shopping cart package like osCommerce, which although primarily for building an e-commerce store, does have the ability to have the cart turned off, leaving a simple gallery & registration system. However, the client felt this was too complex & preferred a simpler design.

I then decided to run with a mainly CSS based site with a registration & login system, allowing access to an image gallery & the download page. The site design itself was pretty straightforward, the time consuming task was working with the large number of images that had to be pulled from the PDF based catalogue, resized & in some cases cropped/rotated!

Once the images were sorted, the next step was to create the gallery & I tried a number of options before settling on an Image Thumbnail Viewer Script from Dynamic Drive. This launched a nice, centred, bordered image when selected & even allows for some text to be added to the enlarged image.

The final element was to create the registration & login system, which is using a mySQL database & asks users to register before allowing access to the gallery categories and the catalogue download pages. There have been a few teething problems with the registration due to not much time for testing; the client was already telling people the site was live! But all seems fine now & no further issues have arisen.

I’m pretty pleased with the site and just waiting for some home page copy & additional photos, from the client, to fill/brighten it up a little before signing off on it.

More important than ever to be in the top 10 search engine results

June 3, 2008 By freshwebz

A new report suggests internet searchers are getting more impatient and now 68% of users make their choice from the top 10 search engine results!

The report was conducted over December 2007 & January 2008 & tried to develop an understanding of how search engine users behaved in their searches on the three largest search engines: Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

The study revealed that 68% of search engine users click a search result within the first page of results and 92% click a result within the first three pages of search results! The importance of appearing high in the search results has always been emphasised by SEO companies & it seems this importance is steadily growing! There is a clear pattern developing between the data from 2002 to 2008 which indicates that more search engine users click the first page in 2008 (68%) as compared to 2002 (48%). Inversely, fewer search engine users are willing to click results past the third page in 2008 (8%) as compared 2002 (19%). In both these cases, there is a year on year rise & fall respectively.

So more than ever, it is vital for search marketers to ensure that their sites appear within the first three pages of search results and especially on page one.

In a second related finding, the study revealed that 49% of search engine users who continue their search process when not initially finding what they seek, change their search term and/or search engine after reviewing just the first page of search results, rather than search further down the SERPS & 91% do so if they do not find what they seek in the first three pages. Again from 2002 to 2008, it seems that more users are abandoning their query after reviewing the first page in 2008 (49%) as compared 2002 (28%) & fewer users are willing to continue their review of results past the third page in 2008 (9%) as compared to 2002 (22%).

Again, the need to obtain top placements on search results pages has progressively increased in importance for search engine marketers.

Finally, the study reveals that brand equity is conveyed upon companies whose websites appear among the top search results by roughly a third of the search engine users. In 2008, 39% of search engine users believe that the companies whose websites are returned among the top search results are the leaders in their field. This figure has grown from 33% in 2002. Another 42% feel neutral on this question, with only 19% believing that top search engine rankings do not automatically denote an industry leader.

Initiatives that produce top search engine rankings can clearly help companies achieve their branding goals.

The study, tabled by Yahoo!, iProspect and Juniper Research, paints a dark picture for website owners who are sitting below the top 10 results! Theoretically, they are only exposing their sites to 32% of searchers by sitting off the first page.

Freshwebz have partnered with one of the UK’s leading Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) companies to offer your website guaranteed Top 10 Google rankings for your desired keywords in the natural listings.

High Google natural rankings will provide high levels of ‘ready to spend’ traffic to your website and unlike the Adwords/sponsored listings each click is free, meaning a greater level of return.

Guaranteed results or your investment back..it’s that simple
